Library to host annual art contest

It will be artisanship personified when the Slatington Public Library hosts the Woman’s Club of Slatington’s annual art contest.

Louise Bechtel, librarian, and a member of the woman’s club, said the art contest will be held at 7 p.m. Monday.

Bechtel said it will showcase student art and adult art, photography, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional art works.

“Everything has already been judged,” Bechtel said. “We’re pleased with the number of entries we got.”

She said small monetary prizes will be given to students, there will be a coloring contest for younger children ages preschool through second grade, and there will also be adult coloring.

Bechtel said the art contest is held in large part to “encourage student creativity.”

“It gives them a platform to show their gifts,” she said. “It also allows adults to share what they do, it’s promoting the women’s club, and also the library.”

Bechtel said there will be a short program, refreshments, and entertainment provided by Northern Lehigh School District graduate Margaret Surdovel, a music teacher in the Bangor Area School District.

“It’s a win-win,” she said. “We get people in the library, it’s promoting a lot of student art, and adults have contributed a lot this year.”
