Firefighters plan drill at vacant Nesquehoning restaurant

If you see firefighters in full gear at a former restaurant on the east end of Nesquehoning, don’t be alarmed. It’s only a drill.

Nesquehoning Borough Council last week, approved a motion for the fire departments to use the former Le Quattro Stagioni restaurant at the intersection of routes 209 and 93 for training purposes as long as the owners are OK with it. The building is slated to be demolished next month to make way for a new restaurant that will be built at that location in the near future.

The build has sat vacant since a fire in the roof shut down the business in September 2014.

John McArdle, fire chief for Nesquehoning Hose Company, approached council to ask for the permission.

He said that one of the volunteers approached the owners of the property, Ric and Kathy (Kovatch) Reaman, who are bringing a Huddle House to the location, about possibly using the building for a live training.

He said there are some things the department needs to do before that can happen though, including having a letter from the Reamans granting the fire department permission, as well as disconnecting all of the utilities at the facility.

“We are trying to figure out what we can do in a short time frame,” McArdle said this week.

Council saw no problem with giving the fire departments permission, but Councilman Frank Jacobs questioned what the future was for the home on the property on Route 93 behind the former restaurant.

No further discussion on the house occurred.

In other matters, council acted on or discussed the following items:

• Adopted a revised burning ordinance that was advertised last month.

• Appointed Shawn Quigley to the borough water authority.

• Approved a contract with DBI Services for street sweeping this spring.

• Mayor Sam Kitchko announced that for the month of February, the police collected $3,368.97; issued 46 traffic citations; and had 409 incidents reported.
