Palmerton man sent to state prison for various charges

A Palmerton man, with a “rap sheet” two pages long, was sentenced to a state prison term this week in Carbon County court.

Glennis Edward Park, 33, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of two to four years in a state correctional institution. Park previously pleaded to two counts each of theft, criminal trespass, loitering or prowling at night, possession of drug paraphernalia and a summary offense of retail theft.

Park was charged for an incident on Sept. 6, 2017, when he broke into the First United Church of Christ at 457 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, where he took food items. He also admitted to entering a property in the 400 block of Lafayette Avenue on June 28. He admitted stealing a wallet on July 9 from the 500 block of Mauch Chunk Road. The loitering and prowling offenses also occurred on July 9 when police responded to a report of a person entering vehicles along Avenue A and Lehigh Avenue.

He was arrested on Sept. 8, 2017, when Palmerton police responded to the Family Dollar Store for a retail theft incident. Park had taken an item valued at $5.30. While being taken into custody the paraphernalia was found on him.

Nanovic told him, “You committed a lot of small crimes that have major consequences in your life.”

Nanovic said a presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation office indicated Park has been a drug abuser for half his life. The judge said with that kind of drug problem the state system offers the best programs to address it.

Holding up sheets of paper, Nanovic said, “This is your rap sheet, two pages long.”

In addition to the prison term, Nanovic ordered Park to make total restitution of $272.19, get both mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, supply a DNA sample, pay a fine of $300 for the retail theft charge and pay court costs of about $1,000.

Currently an inmate in the county prison, Park was given credit for 198 days spent in jail. He now will be transferred to a state prison.
