East Penn to discuss proposal to use biosolids on farm

The East Penn Township Supervisors plan to provide answers for residents who raised questions about a proposal to use treated sewage sludge on a farm in the township.

The supervisors are holding a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at the East Penn Social Hall. It is a follow-up to a meeting held March 1 when about a dozen residents shared comments and concerns about the proposed use of treated sewage sludge, aka biosolids.

Synagro Inc. of Baltimore intends to spread biosolids on 165 acres owned by Dennis Cunfer and Wanda Crostley.

The Department of Environmental Protection approved Synagro’s request to use the material last week. DEP’s approval allows Synagro to use Class B biosolids. Class B biosolids must be treated to decrease the level of pollutants. Using them requires approval from DEP.

There is a higher-quality class of biosolids, class A, which have a lower level of pollutants and do not require DEP’s approval.

During the first meeting, residents raised questions about potential runoff from the farm and concerns about animals eating crops grown using biosolids as fertilizer.
