Carbon woman given county prison term for drug dealing

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term on Tuesday after previously admitting to a drug dealing charge.

Tammy M. Christman, 49, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance — methamphetamine. The jail term will be followed by two years of probation.

She was arrested following an investigation by Jim Thorpe police to drug dealing in the area of Onoko Lane. Police then set up a buy by a confidential informant who purchased a quantity of meth from Christman.

Nanovic said borough police had identified Christman as a drug dealer for a number of years in the community. Nanovic said the report stated that “you were dealing drugs in conjunction with your daughter.” He said police noted at least 62 contacts with her over the years.

Christman told Nanovic, “I believe everyone deserves a second chance.”

Defense attorney Matthew Mottola, of the public defender’s office, said Christman had no prior arrests for drugs and her only prior conviction ended with an ARD placement in Lehigh County.

In addition to the prison term, Nanovic ordered Christman to get both mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation and supply a DNA sample.

She was given credit for 37 days spent in prison on the charge. She will begin the jail term at 4 p.m. on April 2. She was granted work-release privileges.
