Inmates accused in corrections officers attack face court

A Schuylkill County district judge on Monday found sufficient evidence against two of the men accused of attacking corrections officers to court.

William Clark, 32, of Pottsville, and Rakeem McCullough, 23, of Newark, remain in the county jail under $50,000 cash bail each.

Pottsville police charged them with five counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, and a third man, Edwin Cruet with one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.

However, District Judge James Reiley of Pottsville, after listening to testimony, dismissed three of the aggravated assault charges, two of the simple assault charges and the charge of harassment.

Cruet, 29, of Reading, waived his right to a preliminary hearing. He faces charges of simple assault and harassment; a charge of aggravated assault was dismissed.

He, too, remains in jail under $50,000 cash bail.

A photograph of Clark and McCullough, published in the Republican Herald newspaper, shows them grinning and throwing gang signs as they were leaving Reiley’s office on Monday.

According to Pottsville police, the attack happened on Feb. 2.

Police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky said his officers were called to the jail, at 230 Sanderson St., at about 7 p.m.

When police arrived, they learned that all of the inmates had been contained.

The incident happened in the restricted housing unit, which is used for disciplinary, administrative and protective custody inmates.

The inmates were identified as Clark, Cruet and McCullough.

Police learned that Clark was being prepared to be moved to another cell, and he became uncooperative despite several verbal commands issued by the correctional officers, forcing the them to enter into the cell.

Prior to the guards entering the cell, the three inmates placed towels around their faces in an attempt to prevent the correctional officers from using aerosol chemical agents, such as pepper spray, to remove them from the cell.

As the correctional officers entered the cell, all three inmates took up an aggressive fighting stance in the rear of the cell.

The inmates started a physical assault on the guards, requiring defensive responses from the correctional officers to stop the aggressive criminal activity.

The correctional officers were successful in overcoming the deliberate and planned physical resistance of the inmates.

Due to injuries sustained during the incident, two corrections officers sought medical treatment at a local facility, and each of the three inmates also were taken for treatment at a local medical facility.
