Raising the House brings more fun to 5K

Raising the House held its fun and philanthropic 5K, honoring beloved Towamensing Elementary School teacher Blaine House, in Palmerton last Saturday.

“The 5K is our largest fundraiser for Raising the House. We use the money to support students and families in the district who are facing hardships,” Tamara House said.

Proceeds from the event also go toward free activities, school supply giveaways, winter apparel donations, holiday meal contributions, a scholarship for a graduating Palmerton senior and more.

This year’s race had a few new features, including special awards in the team categories and a fun theme.

“Blaine was known for his mustache, so this year as something fun to do with the race we are doing a ‘Get Your ’Stache On.’ We have been encouraging men to grow mustaches for the race. We are going to have a photo wall where people can take selfies, and in the race day goody bags there will be paper mustaches for people to take pictures with. It’s just something fun to do, and also another way to honor Blaine,” House said.

A trainer hosted a pre-race warmup starting at 9:45 a.m., followed by the national anthem sung by Billy Drake, and a prayer by Mitchell Hourt. Frank Hall served as the race DJ.

The 5K kicked off at 10 a.m. at Third Street and Franklin Avenue in the Borough Park with the Penn State cheer, as House was a huge PSU fan.

Prizes were awarded to the top male and female runners overall, as well as the top three male and female runners in each age group, including 12 and under, 13-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and up.

Emma Martinez finished as the top female runner with a time of 22 minutes, 5 seconds. Joseph Kirk was top overall male winner with 18 minutes, 2 seconds.

The largest team registered, Dedicated Fitness, will set the criteria for the scholarship for a graduating Palmerton High School senior. This year, Raising the House will donate $10 per runner, up to $250, to Dedicated Fitness’ charities of choice, as they ranked as the fastest and largest team.
