Inclement weather a factor in Interstate 81 crashes

The inclement weather this past weekend contributed to numerous traveling problems throughout the region, including four crashes on Interstate 81 in Delano and Mahanoy townships, Schuylkill County, according to state police at the Frackville barracks.

The first of three crashes on Friday happened when a tractor trailer jackknifed at 9:36 a.m. Friday in Mahanoy Township.

Police said Harjinder Heer, 51, of Laval, Quebec, Canada, was driving the 2010 Freightliner Cascadia southbound on the snow-covered roadway when he lost control of the rig and it jackknifed, traveled off the west berm and struck the guide rail, coming to rest on the I-81 on ramp.

Police said around 50 feet of railing was damaged by the rig, which needed to be towed from the scene. Heer was not injured.

Then at 10:47 a.m., a driver and two passengers escaped injuries in a crash in Delano Township, about 117 feet north of Lofty Road.

Police said Rita Brooks, 60, of Harrisburg, was driving a 2013 Cadillac ATS northbound when she lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered roadway and it slid off the east berm, striking the guide rail with its front end. The vehicle came to rest on the east berm facing northeast. It sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.

Brooks and two 13-year-old passengers were all seat-belted and unhurt.

Police then were called to a crash at noon in Mahanoy Township after a second tractor-trailer was involved in an crash.

Police said Sanlake Chomchat, 45, of Lakewood, California, was driving the 2012 Freightliner northbound when he lost control and it jackknifed and traveled off the west berm, striking the guide rails. This caused the rig to completely block the northbound lanes of travel for around 50 minutes until it could be removed by a tow truck.

Chomchat was not injured.

Police also investigated a one-vehicle crash at 2:34 a.m. Sunday in Delano Township.

Police said Randy J. Zamudio-Estrada, 27, of Shenandoah, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche northbound on I-781 when it went off the left side of the road, struck and downed a roadside street sign, climbed an embankment and traveled about 240 feet along the embankment before striking a small tree.

Police said the vehicle struck a ditch as it descended the embankment, crossed both northbound lanes and came to rest in a grassy area adjacent to the right northbound berm facing east.

Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and sustained facial injuries from striking the windshield.

In the crashes on Friday, all three drivers were cited. In the Sunday crash, Zamudio-Estrata was cited for careless driving.
