Snow, high winds, could result in dangerous conditions

A combination of snow and high-gusting winds could make for dangerous conditions later today and into the evening.

Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said what began as rain this morning was expected to change over to snow, resulting in about 2 to 3 inches, and up to 4 to 5 inches in the higher elevations.

“It will be very windy, with the winds gusting over 40 (miles per hour) at times today,” Kines said. “You got to watch out for maybe some branches coming down, maybe even trees, that could have impacts on power lines, cause power outages, that kind of stuff.”

Kines added, “I also suspect the roads will become slick as well.”

“Take it easy, especially when you’re heading up in the higher terrain,” he said. “The combination of potentially slick roads and strong winds can cause havoc.”

On a positive note, Kines said he expects things to wind down by this evening. While it will remain blustery, precipitation will stop.

“I kind of think by 8 or 9 (p.m.) it’s done with, and even before that it will be letting up some,” he said.

Kines said the weekend should be dry, though still chilly, with a noticeable wind blowing Saturday.

Sunday is expected to be sunny, with less wind.
