Pennsylvania First Lady Frances Wolf made a stop in Palmerton on Wednesday to visit third-grade students at S.S. Palmer Elementary.

Letters from the students to Mr. and Mrs. Wolf in the fall prompted the appearance, according to third-grade teacher Bobbi Yeager.

“As part of our third-grade curriculum we do letter writing and this year, our class wanted to write to someone real,” Yeager said. “We wrote to Mrs. Wolf and the governor and to our surprise, they wrote us back.”

But the surprises didn’t stop there.

The school also received a box of books and coloring books about Pennsylvania.

“We were so thrilled with that and surely we thought that would be the end of it,” Yeager said.

Fast forward to last week and the school received a call from Harrisburg that the first lady would be making a stop at the school.

Students greeted Wolf upon arrival and took her to their classroom where they explained different programs and things they are working on in school.

“The students also made special pictures because they know Mrs. Wolf is very interested in the arts so they wanted to show off some of their work as well,” Yeager said.

In the library, the entire third-grade class heard Wolf read “How To Make An Apple Pie And See The World.”

S.S. Palmer’s staff also presented Wolf with a framed winter scene of the bandshell in the Palmerton park.

During her visit, Wolf emphasized the governor’s commitment to increasing funding for public education at all levels, from Pre-K to higher education.

“I was delighted to meet with such talented and bright young people at S.S. Palmer Elementary School today,” she said. “We owe it to these students, and all students in Pennsylvania, to ensure we are giving them the resources they need to succeed. That is why investing in education from preschool through higher education has been a top priority for this administration since day one.”

Yeager said it is the first time a first lady has visited the school.

“It’s very special,” she said. “It’s nice for the kids to see the fruits of their labor. She cared enough to come see us and I think it’s a huge day for the school.”
