Three crashes in one day on I-81

State police at Frackville reported investigating five crashes along Schuylkill County roadways, including three that occurred along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township. Two of the three occurred within a few minutes of each other at the same general location. All three crashes on the interstate occurred on Tuesday.

• A one-vehicle crash occurred at 1:56 p.m. as Jessica K. Coup, 22, of Guilderland, New York, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tracker northbound when the right rear tread separated from the rest of the tire causing her to lose control.

The Tracker spun 90 degrees counterclockwise and struck a guide rail along the berm. The vehicle came to rest partway in the northbound passing lane facing north. Coup was not injured.

Troopers said the northbound passing lane was closed due to the crash and a flare pattern had been set up.

• At 2:07 p.m. John J. McNulty, 76, of Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County, was northbound in the right lane operating a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic and slowing down due to the prior crash. Steve D. Chamberlin, 50, of Tellico Plains, Tennessee, operating a 2007 Freightliner truck-tractor with trailer, was also northbound behind McNulty and failed to slow down. The front of the truck hit the rear of the Sonic. The rig then ran over emergency flares set up in the closed lane and forced a state trooper, investigating the first crash, to flee for safety over the guide rail.

No one was injured. Chamberlin was cited for careless driving.

• The third crash on I-81 occurred at 3:46 p.m. in Delano Township. Troopers said Gregory D. Collins, 50, of Jackson, Mississippi, was driving a 2017 Freightliner truck-tractor with trailer southbound while Brian R. Williams, 78, of Westport, Ontario, Canada, was stopped along the shoulder operating a mobile home. As the rig passed the mobile home it veered to the right with the front windshield being shattered and the right mirror destroyed on the mobile home. The left mirror on the truck was also destroyed.

Williams pulled out and attempted to have Collins stop by flashing his lights but he did not. Collins was eventually stopped by a state police patrol unit from the Jonestown barracks.

No one was injured in the incident. Troopers charged Collins with hit and run and careless driving.

• The fourth crash occurred at 6:26 a.m. Wednesday along Brandonville Road (Route 339), in Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Brett D. Befano, 24, of Kelayres, was northbound while Jason J. Weikel, 48, of Zion Grove, was southbound. Befano rounded a right-hand curve and his vehicle entered the southbound lane where his 2013 Chrysler 300 collided into Weikel’s 2011 Toyota RAV4.

No one was injured. The RAV4 had to be towed.

Troopers cited Befano for the crash.

• The fifth crash was reported at 11:08 a.m. along Route 61 in New Castle Township. Troopers said Olivia P. Aguilera, 24, of McAdoo, was driving a 2014 Honda CRV northbound and negotiating a left curve when the CRV drifted right onto the shoulder. Aquilera attempted to steer back onto the roadway but lost control. The CRV rotated 30 degrees clockwise and skidded partway into the left lane, then back across the right lane. It came to rest against the guide rail.

Aquilera was not injured. She was cited for the crash.
