Lehighton council reappoints vice president

The role of vice president on Lehighton Borough Council has been solved.

At a special meeting on Wednesday, council on a 4-3 vote appointed Councilman Darryl Arner to the post.

Councilmen Jared McEvoy and Ryan Saunders, along with council President Grant Hunsicker and Arner voted in favor. Councilwomen Autumn Abelovsky, Lisa Perry and Councilman Joe Flickinger were opposed.

That came after a nomination to have Flickinger serve in that capacity failed on a 3-4 vote, with McEvoy, Saunders, Hunsicker and Arner opposed, and Abelovsky, Perry and Flickinger in favor.

Flickinger asked Arner if he was going to fulfill his obligations wholeheartedly, to which Arner said he would.

After the reorganization meeting earlier this month and consulting with borough solicitor Jim Nanovic, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said council needed to revisit the matter of vice president.

At the reorganization meeting, which Nanovic was not present for, a motion was made to nominate Arner as vice president, with McEvoy, Saunders and Hunsicker in favor, and Abelovsky, Perry and Flickinger opposed. Arner was absent.

Abelovsky then made a motion to nominate Flickinger to the post, with Abelovsky, Perry and Flickinger in favor, and McEvoy, Saunders and Hunsicker opposed.

In his capacity as mayor, Clark Ritter voted against Arner, and it was implied that Flickinger was vice president.

However, after reviewing the minutes from that meeting, Beckett said the vote for Flickinger was not finalized.

Beckett said that Abelovsky had nominated Flickinger, however, the vote did not occur after Ritter broke the tie on Arner.

“In turn, we needed to revisit vice president,” Beckett said.
