Schuylkill man charged with attempted homicide

A Schuylkill County man has been charged with attempted homicide for an incident that occurred last year.

Saint Clair police said Daniel Lance Lopez, 21, of Shenandoah, was charged in connection to a shooting which took place on Dec. 18 at about 7 p.m., inside the Schuylkill County Housing Projects, located within the 300 block of Cherry Street in the borough.

According to the police investigation and an interview conducted with Lopez at the police station, it is alleged Lopez conducted an ambush-style attack when he fired several rounds from a 9 mm handgun into an occupied vehicle being driven in the 300 Block of Cherry Street, attempting to strike the occupants of the vehicle. The attack resulted in the vehicle being rendered inoperable and heavily damaged.

Lopez stated that he fled the scene following the incident. In the days after the shooting Lopez stated that he dismantled the firearm, resulting in it being left inoperable and discarded the parts of the weapon on local strip mining lands.

Lopez stated he then traveled to Harrisburg with his family to flee the area of the shooting.

Lopez was arraigned by on-call District Judge James Reilly, of Pottsville, on two counts each of criminal attempt to commit homicide, aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangering; and one count each of persons not to possess a firearm, firearm carried without a license, possessing instruments of crime and criminal mischief.

Lopez was unable to post the $200,000 cash bail set and was committed to county prison.

Chief of police William M. Dempsey announced the arrest.
