One dead in early morning Turnpike crash

One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash early this morning on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County.

State police at the Pocono barracks said the collision occurred at 2:58 a.m. at the 80.6 mile marker northbound in Penn Forest Township.

Police said the collision took place as a truck/tractor combination driving in the left lane struck a 2005 Pontiac G6 that sat in the roadway because it had been disabled from a previous crash that took place about one minute earlier.

As a result of the impact, a passenger inside the Pontiac was fatally injured. The person’s name has not been released at this time.

Responding were the Franklin Township Fire Company and Lehighton Ambulance.

The Northeast Extension of the turnpike was closed for the northbound lanes between the Mahoning Valley Interchange and Pocono Interchange from around 3 a.m. to 6:20 a.m.
