Keeping rock alive: Lehighton’s Another Day Dawns a finalist in competition for recording contract

It’s not every day that a hard rock band from a small town gets to perform live on stage at the iconic Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

But come Tuesday, Another Day Dawns will take their place on the famed stage, in front of some of the music industry’s biggest names.

The concert will be live-streamed to fans all around the country.

It’s been a good year for the Lehighton rockers, and it could get even better.

The band received word Friday that it’s one of five finalists in the neXt2Rock competition. The winner walks away with a recording contract with Big Machine Records and the promise of national airplay on Cumulus Media radio stations. Big Machine and Cumulus are the contest sponsors.

The announcement was made public on Monday.

“Oh man, we were really excited,” said frontman and lead vocalist Dakota McGeehan, 22, about getting the news. “I woke up to eight missed calls from our manager. We were on group chats. We were thrilled. I didn’t expect to get to the top five out of thousands of bands. It’s intense.”

The band, which includes Tyler Ritter, 19, lead guitarist; Nick McGeehan (no relation to Dakota), 19, drummer; and Livi Dillon, 19, bassist, began this latest journey back in October, after spending the past few months touring and opening for Austin John Winkler, formerly of Hinder; Fuel; Marcy’s Playground; Puddle of Mudd; the Swedish metal band, Avatar; and Godsmack.

The first step in the neXt2Rock competition was a voting round for the fans. With close to 8,000 likes and follows on the Another Day Dawns official Facebook page, that was an easy hurdle to overcome. The next step was a live show on Nov. 17 with 10 other bands at Thirst T’s Bar and Grill in Scranton.

Judges that night included musician Chris Motionless of Motionless in White; John Phillips, former tour manager for Breaking Benjamin; and Mike Duffy, on air personality at 97.9X, the Scranton radio station that sponsored the local competition.

By the end of the night, not only had Another Day Dawns been declared the winner, but it was clear the judges had been impressed.

“They really liked us,” said McGeehan. “One of them pulled us aside and told us how impressed they were and how we are keeping rock alive.”

Sixty Cumulus Media radio stations participated in the live round of competition, and 60 bands were chosen as local winners from about 2,000 who had made it past the fan voting. Those 60 bands had to submit a performance video. The national judges reviewed those videos to determine the five bands who will gather in L.A. next week.

In addition to Another Day Dawns, the top artists are Marina City, Chicago; Ivory Black, Kansas City; Migrant Motel, Los Angeles; and Will Evans, New London, Connecticut.

The band, along with their managers, will be flying out Monday. The trip and all expenses are being covered by the contest organizers.

In the meantime, McGeehan said he’s getting a little anxious, while he, Nick, Livi and Tyler prepare for this all-important trip.

“We’re counting down the days,” he said. “We have a countdown every day.”

The competition will be held Tuesday. The doors to The Viper Room open at 6 p.m., McGeehan said, but he wasn’t sure what time the event would kick off.

When it does start, it will be streamed live on the Another Day Dawns’ Facebook page as well as at http://next2rock.com, so the band’s local fans will be able to watch. (Just remember, Los Angeles is three hours behind us here on the East Coast.)

“We have a lot of support at home, and want to make sure everybody gets a front-row seat.”

McGeehan said they’ll have more details once they arrive in California and will be updating that information on their Facebook page.

Celebrity judges for the finals at The Viper Room will be Gavin Rossdale, frontman of the rock band Bush; Scott Borchetta, record executive and founder of Big Machine Label Group; John Varvatos, record executive and music-centric fashion designer; Desmond Child, songwriter and producer; and Steve Jones, best known as guitarist for the Sex Pistols.

The winner will be announced Tuesday during the event, and will be handed their record deal with Big Machine Records. Copies of the contract were already sent to the finalists so they know what to expect.

Big Machine Records, the label that produces Taylor Swift and other well-known country and pop singers, is expanding into the rock and hard rock genre, said McGeehan.

“The winner will receive a one-year record deal, unless the label wants to keep moving forward. They’ll also receive huge radio play, every day all over well-known areas.”

He said the contract includes touring, national signings.

“They will take care of us,” said McGeehan.

“We want to thank the fans from the bottom of our hearts,” said McGeehan.

“We started out in small clubs, every night got bigger and bigger. We couldn’t have gotten into this competition without our fans voting us in.”

“It’s a good feeling that people believe in a teen band as much as they do.”

Another Day Dawns recently uploaded a new website at anotherdaydawns.com, said McGeehan.

“We will be putting up some new songs, especially if we win. It will be sooner rather than later.”
