Lehighton library hosts ‘Thanks for Giving’ open house Sunday

The Lehighton Area Memorial Library will hold a “Thanks for Giving” open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The open house is a chance for the community to learn more about what the library has to offer and what new programs will be coming to the library.

The event is also a chance for the library to thank its donors and patrons for supporting the library’s mission.

The winning raffle tickets for the library’s Monday for Mondays raffle will also be pulled during the open house at 2:45 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the library this weekend or during the open house. Winners do not need to be present during the drawing.

“We wanted to have an event to pull winners for the raffle. We thought that now would be a good time to reintroduce people to the library and what we are doing,” said Lehighton librarian Melissa Hawk. “We also want to thank the community for what they do for us.”

Hawk, who joined the staff this fall, is also hoping to meet with patrons during the open house and get feedback on what resources and programs the community would like to see at the library.

All proceeds from the Money for Mondays raffle are being used toward the library’s goal of reopening on Mondays. The library board cut its hours in 2015 due to a funding shortage, but is hopeful that with enough community support they can again expand their hours and offerings.

Continuing with their “thankful” theme, the library is holding a nonperishable food drive for the Trinity Food Pantry, which serves needy families in the Lehighton Area School District. Donations of canned and boxed goods will be accepted during the open house and throughout the month of November.

Guests who currently have fines on their library account may have up to $5 in fines waived this month by donating a nonperishable food items; for every canned or boxed food item donated, the library will waive $1 in fines. Patrons without fines can select one book from the Book Nook for each food item donated, up to five books.

Hawk hopes that the open house will be a relaxed program and encouraged members of the community to stop by anytime between 1-3 p.m. Light refreshments and a children’s craft will be offered throughout the afternoon.
