Walnutport tables firefighter tax relief plan for now

Walnutport once again tabled the volunteer firefighter tax relief ordinance.

Borough Council member Jennifer Wentz asked the board to hold off on either adopting or dropping a motion for township residing volunteers to receive a $250 property tax or personal tax break.

“We should have a policy in place,” said borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz.

“It’s an incentive to get people to join, but we don’t want people showing up one time and getting the cut,” he said.

“We are trying to grab as many people as possible. This way it stays within the borough and it does what it is supposed to do, attract individuals to the department,” Wentz said.

“We have been holding onto this so long, we need to move forward,” she said.

The board agreed to revisit the issue at its January reorganization meeting.
