Workers from Axis Stabilization began a three-to-four week project Monday to stabilize a wall along High Street in Jim Thorpe borough.

According to a telephone message sent to borough residents living on Broadway last week, High Street will be closed and there will be no parking in the area of the construction from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday while work takes place.

Water has been seeping inside the wall and busting it out, according to borough officials.

Axis’ bid of $307,365 was considerably less than an initial estimate of $500,000. The borough also approved a $450,000 loan from Mauch Chunk Trust Company at 2.6 percent interest for 10 years to help pay for the work.

Earlier this year, officials estimated the crack in the wall has grown from 2 inches to around 6 or 7 inches and were concerned about the potential for collapse.

According to borough officials, around 200 feet of the wall will be repaired through a pinning process.
