Weatherly bridge work to continue until the end of the year

A maintenance project on a prominent bridge in Weatherly Borough is expected to last another two months, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The open-grate bridge on East Main Street is the main connection for traffic coming into the borough from Route 93. It sees approximately 1,900 vehicles per day, PennDOT spokesman Sean Brown said.

It’s also a popular spot for local organizations to advertise their upcoming events, or show support for a Weatherly Wreckers sports team.

A PennDOT contractor started work in mid-October on a project to replace the bridge deck panels. The work is expected to wrap up around Dec. 31.

During the bridge work, traffic is be reduced to one lane. Flaggers have been in place 24 hours to direct traffic.

The project also includes painting the tops of the steel beams, and some minor concrete repairs beneath the bridge structure. The steel open-grate bridge was built in 1955.

The project is part of a contract with Kriger Construction to fix 13 structures in northeast Pennsylvania, at a total cost of $5,739,399.

The specific cost of the Weatherly bridge maintenance was not available.
