Slatington library to host fundraiser

The Slatington Public Library will host its 21st annual Baskets ’n More auction on Friday at the Diamond Fire Company Social Hall on Main Street in Walnutport.

The Diamond kitchen will be open during the event. Mike Peters will be performing for the crowd starting at 5 p.m., with auction to follow at 7:30 p.m.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Wanda Owens, the president of the library’s board of directors.

“We lost a lot of income with the state cutbacks,” she said.

The historic library serves the area’s three municipalities; Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township.

“Walnutport and Washington Township have cut back their funding because of their own budgets,” she said.

“All libraries are facing budgetary concerns. We have to get out there and get as much funding as we can.”

For this year’s raffle special items like four one-day passes to Disney Park Hopper, several gift cards to Lehigh Valley area restaurants will be up for grabs along with a 50/50 raffle.

Auction items donated by community members and businesses include a family pass to Becky’s Drive-In, Allentown Art Museum passes, a slate clock from PA Slatecraft, Iron Pigs 2018 season vouchers for field-level seats, a one-month access card to Snap Fitness, and a Northern Lehigh Team Sales garden flag holder with Northern Lehigh Bulldog flag to name a few.

All proceeds raised from the auction items will be put toward the daily operations of the library.

The library will close at 3 p.m. on Friday and reopen Monday morning.

“We’ve been here since 1936 and we’d like to be here another 80 years,” Owens said.
