Schuylkill deals with blight

Schuylkill County is tackling blight, one property at a time.

On Wednesday, commissioners signed off on lists of properties that were sold to the highest bidders at the judicial sale on Sept. 8, and list of repository sale bids compiled by Tax Claim office Director Angela D. Toomey.While most of the properties were bought by people, the county and municipalities bought several that are destined for demolition.Some will be torn down using money from a $1.4 million state Department of Community and Economic Development the county received in January.The properties include 202 Pitt St., Tamaqua, bought by the borough for $1; 461 W. Mahanoy Ave., Butler Township, bought by the township for $1; 209 Biddle St., Gordon borough, bought by the borough for $1; and 231 W. Coal St., 17 N. Union St., and 319 W. Cherry St, all bought by Shenandoah borough for $1.The Schuylkill County Land Bank bought properties at 1830 Market St., 0 Chestnut St., 1409-1411 Centre St. and 33 Catawissa Road, all in Ashland.Also, commissioners awarded a $14,111 contract to Dudash Pipeline Company Inc., Pottsville, for a demolition project at 1207 Walnut St., Ashland.Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved the hiring of three caseworkers for the Children and Youth Services Agency.They are Aimee Thompson of Pitman, Jacklynn Smolock of Girardville and Bernard Pytko of Minersville.They'll earn $17.44 an hour each.In other matters, commissioners opened the sole bid for uniforms for prison employees.The bid, Hess Embroidery & Uniforms, Reading, was for $38,759.59 for one year.Hess also submitted optional bids for second and third years, at $39,913.67 and $39,949.07, respectively.Commissioners will decide whether to give Hess the contract at a future meeting.
