Eagles pull away from Jim Thorpe

Experience goes a long way in any sport, and the Blue Mountain girls soccer team showed that against Jim Thorpe on Tuesday.

The Eagles, who are the defending District 11 3A champs, look to be a team that will compete for a title again this season as they defeated the Olympians 10-0 for a Schuylkill League Division 1 victory.Good passing, mixed with team speed and the ability to finish at the net are all necessary attributes for a successful team. However, it's very rare that a team possesses all of those.Enter Blue Mountain, which used all of those intangibles to dominate the Olympians. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and never looked back."It took us a little bit of time to find the space out there, the girls were definitely feeling things out, and once we were able to find some space we started to find the net," said Eagles head coach Mike Burcik. "We really are fortunate that we have a lot of athletic girls that can play the game, so we want to keep competing, and do as much as we can with our talent."The Olympians (3-5, 1-4) struggled on the day, but came out and played well defensively for the first 12 minutes. Thorpe gave up a goal at that mark, but then held the Eagles off for another 10 minutes, which is when Blue Mountain scored its second goal. The Eagles (4-2-1, 4-0) were able to reel off two more goals in the next four minutes to break the game open, but there are some positive things the Olympians can build off from its early defensive success."Blue Mountain is a great program, the best around in our area. They just got back from England and Scotland, they were playing over there, fine-tuning some things, so we use this game to just learn as much as we can against a very good team," said Jim Thorpe head coach Tom Condly. "I think we did a good job covering early, but with their passing and speed, they just wear you down."The Eagles did wear the Olympians down in the second half. Already up by four goals at the intermission, Blue Mountain added six more to make it 10-0."We're a young group, but this group always fights, and we fought till the end today," said Condly. "We're going to continue to focus on getting better on the defensive side of the ball. That's been a strong suit of ours in the past, we just have to create more pressure. We'll get better, we have some time to get where we want to be."ONSLAUGHT... The Eagles obviously had success offensively, scoring 10 goals, but it was their constant pressure that was the difference. They were able to generate 25 shots on goal.DOMINATING D... Blue Mountain kept Thorpe out of the scoring area throughout the day, so much so, that the Olympians weren't able to get a shot on goal.
