PSU win over Pitt better than score indicated

It was funny this week listening to some Penn State football fans talk about the Nittany Lions 19-point victory over Pitt last weekend.

I got the vibe from most of the people I've talked to - and from some of my media colleagues across the country - that Penn State's 33-14 win should have been more impressive.High expectations can be a great thing, and obviously, the expectations are high for the defending Big Ten champs and the No. 5-ranked team in the country. But I want to caution some Penn State fans about getting a little too greedy this early in the season. So many things must go right this season in order for the Nittany Lions (2-0) to get back to the Big Ten Championship, but the main thing they need to do is win. They don't need to win every game by 30, and they don't need to play perfect. They just need to win.In fact, I think the win over Pitt was a very solid "W" considering what happened a season ago. Rivalry games can always be tricky, and considering Pitt basically played keep-away from the Nittany Lions offense throughout the day, and Penn State still put up 33 points on the board, I consider that pretty impressive. Here are some quick stats that might be able to change your mind if you're one of the people I'm talking about. The Nittany Lions defense gave up just one touchdown, and although Pitt possessed the ball for 38:20 by running the football, it only averaged 3.4 yards per rush. Pitt quarterback Max Browne averaged just 4.6 yards per pass and threw two interceptions. As noted, the Penn State offense possessed the ball for just 21:40 and put 33 points on the board. The Nittany Lions averaged 6.2 yards per rush, and Trace McSorley - who missed some big pass plays that could've broken the game wide open in the first half - still threw for three touchdowns. There's no doubt the Nittany Lions could've played better. But despite that, they still won by 19 points."After the game, I said 'we played a complete game,' and what I mean by that is, when you watch a tape, there's some areas obviously we could have played better in," said Penn State head coach James Franklin. "But I do feel like that all three phases played good enough to win. It's probably a better way to describe a complete game."So, let's move on to today's opponent, the Georgia State Panthers (7:30 p.m. ET, BTN). The Panthers (0-1) hail from the Sun Belt Conference and lost a week one showdown with Tennessee State. The Panthers had 273 yards of total offense in their opener. Their run game produced just 49 yards, but their passing attack put up 224 yards. Utah-transfer quarterback Conner Manning led the Panthers a week ago in passing, going 14-of-17 for 159 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Manning was knocked out of the game last week with a head injury, but is expected to make the start this week. The Penn State defense has been good against both the pass and the run. The Nittany Lions are giving up 114 yards per game on the ground and 137 yards through the air through two games. The Penn State defensive line also got going last week, coming up with five sacks against a stout Pitt offensive line."You look at them on offense, I think the thing that jumps out is their wide receivers. We think they are very talented at wide receiver. They are a spread offense, mostly 11 personnel team. They will mix in some other things, as well," said Franklin. "They are a run-pass-option team. They like to run the stretch and the pin-and-pull play, which we saw a lot of last week, so we have got a little bit of a head start on that."Defensively, the Panthers did not play well against the run in week one, surrendering 238 yards on the ground to FCS opponent Tennessee State. That does not bode well for Georgia State, because when the Nittany Lions have run the ball, the result has been successful. So far this season, Penn State has run the ball 58 times for 395 yards, which is an average of 6.8 yards per carry. Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley has 260 yards rushing in two games and is averaging a video-game like 9.3 yards per carry. I think it's going to be a big day on the ground for the Nittany Lions. Also, look for the Penn State passing game to get back on track this week in the yardage department. Trace McSorley did throw for three touchdowns last week, but he only racked up 164 yards through the air. I expect Georgia State to really stack the box, because of its inability to stop the run with its front four, so McSorley should be able to take advantage. You could see a 500-600 yard total from the Penn State offense today if it plays to its potential. An interesting statistic to keep an eye on for today's game has to do with the Georgia State defense. The Panthers have given up just two plays of 50 yards more in their last 13 games. That's an impressive statistic for any team, no matter what the level or conference. Penn State has shown over their last 10-12 games that the big, explosive play is kind of what its offense is all about, so it will be interesting to see if Georgia State can keep the Nittany Lions from making the big plays."That's a pretty impressive stat, one of the best in the country. I think that's going to be one of the big challenges in the game. They do a great job of limiting big plays, and we do a pretty good job of creating big plays," said Franklin. "So, that's going to be one of the big story lines in the game. You have a number of ways of creating explosive plays; that's throwing it over their head or that's breaking tackles."To me, that states that they are one of the better tackling teams in the country ... typically that's where a lot of explosive plays come (when) you break a tackle and now you're able to take off for another 40, 50 yards, whatever it may be."Las Vegas has Penn State as a 37-point favorite. In my opinion Georgia State just doesn't have the firepower to match-up with the Nittany Lions. I think you're going to see a lot of open Penn State wide receivers down field, because the Panthers are going to sell out on the run, and that means a lot of big plays and quick scores. My pick is Penn State 56, Georgia State 9.
