Lehighton plans first fall festival

Lehighton's new Fall Fest Day is on the horizon, with a scavenger hunt, apple festival and cemetery walk.

Sponsored by the Lehighton Borough Parks and Recreation Board, the event will be held Sept. 23 throughout various parts of the town.The parks and recreation board is attempting to bring new and exciting events to the town, according to Autumn Abelovsky, board secretary."Our Fall Fest Day has something for everyone - children, adults, history buffs, bakers and adventure seekers," Abelovsky said. "What better way to spend a brisk Saturday, then to take in the entertaining activities, talk with friends and make memories."Abelovsky said the parks and recreation board has set a goal of presenting the community with an annual Heritage Weekend, Fireworks Display, Fall Fest Day, Community Christmas in the Park and Music in the Park throughout the spring and summer."While the Christmas tree Lighting in the Park looks to be a yearly favorite, and everyone seems to be talking about the Lehighton fireworks, we hope that the community will come out and see all of the other interesting and fun things that we are bringing to Lehighton," she said.The Lehighton Scavenger Hunt will be held from 10-11 a.m. at the Lehighton Amphitheater, where teams of up to four people may enter the daylong Scavenger Hunt. Packet pickup is at 5 p.m., with end time at 6 p.m. Awards, with winners to be determined by Lehighton history knowledge, information collecting and photo proof of found objects. Participants must have a cellphone with camera/gallery.An Apple Festival will be on display from noon to 4 p.m. in the upper park, where there will be kids/adult crafts, games, baked goods for sale and a pie contest. Bring your best baked apple pie for judging at noon. Awards will be presented at 1 p.m.A Living History Cemetery Walk will be held from 2-6 p.m. at the Lehighton Cemetery, at the Fourth Street entrance. Guides will take groups to various grave sites, where interpreters will relate tales of those departed souls. Learn about residents who helped shape Lehighton from the early days to the present."The cemetery walk was one of the most raved events from the sesquicentennial," Abelovsky said. "We are featuring different residents throughout history, so if people attended the last one, this one will be all new information."There will also be a Meet the Fleet, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lehighton Outdoor Center, as the Lehighton Borough and the Lehighton Fire Department will showcase their fleet of municipal vehicles and fire/rescue equipment.Abelovsky said the board would like to extend a special thanks to the Lehighton Outdoor Center for its generous contributions to the event.The Lehighton Music in the Park series will be held from 5-6 p.m. and feature Pat and Kyla McCloskey, who will perform patriotic and gospel music.From 12:30-4 p.m. the Miller-Keystone Blood Mobile will conduct a blood drive in front of the borough's municipal building.An Art Walk on the D & L Trail and Veteran's Memorial Park that had been scheduled has been postponed due to most local artists displaying at the Bloomsburg Fair, Abelovsky said.All events are free to the public, however good will donations will be accepted at each location, Abelovsky said. Food vendors can be found at locations throughout the event.
