On Thursday, Andrea Andreuzzi, the late Arthur Joseph Gardner's niece, approached the Carbon County Commissioners to invite them and the public to the dedication of the Arthur Joseph Gardner Memorial. The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Tresckow Memorial Park, North Chestnut Street, Tresckow. The memorial project has been underway for the last three years. In January, Edward Shemansky asked the county for financial assistance for the black granite memorial in honor of Gardner.Gardner, a 21-year-old U.S. Navy petty officer, died aboard the USS Helena during the Pearl Harbor attacks.Gardner has also been memorialized in the Hazleton area, with a portion of Route 424, which connects Route 309 in Hazle Village and Route 93, named the Arthur Gardner Beltway in 1969.
