Indians, Bombers settle for tie

Tie games are nothing new for the Palmerton and Lehighton boys soccer teams.

Tuesday night, Mother Nature even played a role in the outcome. With 9:03 left in the second overtime of a 2-2 game, the referees pulled the teams off the field when lightning was observed in the distance. Hard rain and more lightning followed, leading the referees to offi, cially call the game.Last season, the Indians and Bombers non-league matchup also ended in a tie following two overtime periods."I'm disappointed with a tie, especially after we had taken the lead," Lehighton coach Dave Yob said. "But, we made a major mistake with about five minutes to go with centering the ball."We're a work in progress. I'm trying to get the pieces to fit. But we have work to do."Though not thrilled with the outcome, Palmerton coach Ryan Sharkazy did find some positives."I think we definitely had some opportunities that we would want back," Sharkazy said. "But, I really saw some glimpses of what we can be this year. At least that was a positive to take away from today."With 25:57 left in the opening half, the Bombers' Nate Taylor headed a perfect cross from teammate Jesse DeKorte off a corner kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.In the second half, Lehighton freshman Logan Lucas turned a missed shot from Pat Lawler into a goal with 31:43 left.A little over 20 minutes later, the Indians' Isaiah Everett made sure his first shot of the game counted, giving the Indians the lead with 11:30 left in the game. But the Bombers tied it with 5:27 left in regulation when Chris Mattis broke free and eventually passed the ball to DeKorte, who scored to knot the game back up at 2-2."If you could start the season with a win, no matter if it's in the league or out of conference, it's a big confidence booster," Sharkazy said. "I know they were coming off a tough loss and wanted to prove they're a good team. It was our first game of the year and we wanted to prove that we were a team that could do good things this year."But, sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas."EARLY START ... The referees decided to make an attempt to get the game in before the rains came. Instead of a 4 p.m. start, the game began at 3:35 p.m.LAW(LER) IN ORDER ... Indian senior Patrick Lawler has had a lot of success against Palmerton in his career. Lawler scored a goal against the Bombers in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Yesterday, Lawler finished with two assists.JESSE'S WAY ... DeKorte recorded the assist on the game's first goal before adding the game-tying score in the second half. "I wish the kids on our team would really pay attention to how Jesse plays because I don't know if anyone plays as hard as he does," Sharkazy said. "He's an example of what we want this program to be about. He takes his bumps. He takes his bruises. But still does everything to help his team win."
