PV golfers top Lehighton

Pleasant Valley and Lehighton are currently enjoying different types of golf seasons so far this season.

The Bears, who entered their matchup with the Indians with a 4-5 record, hoped to nab a win and improve to a .500 winning percentage. Meanwhile, Lehighton had yet to get its first victory of the season, as it came into Monday's match without a win in five outings.Despite their differences record-wise, the overall goal of both teams and their respective coaches remains the same: constant improvement. The Bears' Steve Krechel was hoping his team would be able to get a win and utilize the victory as a springboard into the toughest section of their schedule, as three perennial powers await them in the near future. Krechel and his squad will get that chance, as they defeated the Tribe 348-411 at Mahoning Valley Country Club."It feels nice to get a win today," Krechel said. "It was a great experience for the kids and this course is in fantastic shape. We have some tough matches coming up, we play Allentown Central Catholic, Nazareth, and then Emmaus and Liberty."After his top two players - Riley Held and Nick Gattuso - fired 82s on the day, the Bears move ahead with optimism."It's always good to get a win, because it's one more in the books," Held said after finishing the 18th hole. "I shot pretty well with an 82 and tied our No. 2 guy on our team, so hopefully we can keep on building and improving, and collect more and more wins throughout the season, and eventually work our way toward districts and play well."Teammates Gattuso and Josh Schillinger (86) both had respectable rounds for the winners, allowing Krechel to smile post-match."The kids said that the greens were very tough, and there were quite a few three-putts today," Krechel said. "But that's irrelevant because the kids are getting invaluable experience out here and playing some good golf, and learning things that they'll be able to use the rest of their lives."Meanwhile, the Tribe fell to 0-6 on the year, but head coach Trevor Miller was still able to find bright spots throughout his lineup. Several of his players were able to shoot some of their better rounds thus far."The good news is, with a round like today, this is the lowest that some of the kids have shot all year," Miller said. "This is the first round of the season where we had a player shoot under 100, so we're improving, which means the kids aren't giving up."Sam Maholick finished with a 99 to enter not only his best round of the season, but the best of any Indian in 2017. Stephen Heery followed with a 100 to add to the team's overall learning."I stress to the kids to just be able to go out and play their own game and not worry about what their opponent is doing," Miller said. "I just want them to play against par, so it's good to see that their scores are getting better. Hopefully they can continue in that direction."The schedule for high school golf is one of, if not the, most intense, as players are thrust into match play."The biggest thing is that we don't really get a lot of practice time," Miller said. "With the beginning of the fall sports season, we have our first match three days after our first practice, and once the season gets started, we have matches most days and don't get enough practice in, comparatively speaking, to our matches."Regardless of the hectic schedule, new golfers, and limited practice time, Miller and Krechel are seeing improvements, which remains the bottom line."The constant improvement is there, and we're getting better and our scores are getting lower, which is ultimately what we are after," Miller said. The Indians face Lourdes today, before returning home Wednesday to host Blue Mountain.ROLL WITH IT ... Mahoning Valley Country Club has been rolling its greens lately to add to the difficulty of the course, as this produces much faster greens, allowing players to potentially three- or four-putt some holes.Pleasant Vy. 348, Lehighton 411PLEASANT VALLEYRiley Held 82, Nick Gattuso 82, Josh Schillinger 86, Harrison Hanyon 98.LEHIGHTON 411Sam Maholick 99, Stephen Heery 100, Lukas David 103, Mason Barndt 109.Played at Mahoning Valley Country Club, par 73.
