Bowmanstown fire company starts GoFundMe

Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company is on the lookout for some help from the community in their effort to protect the town and surrounding areas.

The fire company, which relies primarily on donations and support from the borough, has recently suffered some costly repairs, including the restoration of the station's siren, and replacement of a compressor, a downed air-conditioning unit, and an ice machine. This is in addition to maintaining their current equipment."We're doing more with less, and it's starting to get the point where we just can't keep up," Fire Chief Michael Spairana said.In order to alleviate the expenses, Spairana has established a GoFundMe page."All money raised through this drive will go directly to paying for, or paying off, the above-mentioned items," Spairana said in the page's description. "Should we be able to raise more than we ask, that money will be used for truck maintenance, insurances and other required costs to keep our units in good condition and ready for any call."Spairana said that while the fire company could adequately support its needs in regard to fundraising and volunteers in the past, these days, they are stretched thin."To raise the kind of funding that any kind of fire company needs today, it's astronomical," Spairana said. "You just can't sell enough hamburgers and hot dogs to cover it. We appreciate the community's support, but it's just not enough."In fact, Spairana said that the bulk of the volunteers' hours aren't even necessarily spent in training or action, as fundraising tends to eat up most of their time. In order to help alleviate some of the financial pressure, the chief is asking that the community reach out and help the fire company a little more, so that they can continue to help them."Please, dig a little deeper, give a little more," Spairana said. "If we have more people giving just a little bit, it will go a long way. We volunteer our time and effort to make sure the public is safe, and we need your help."
