Kayaker rescued after fall into Lehigh near Glen Onoko

Rescue personnel from Jim Thorpe, Nesquehoning, and Lehighton fire departments and other units received a call about 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening that a kayaker had fallen into the Lehigh River in the area of Glen Onoko Falls.

The kayaker was eventually spotted by the people in his party sitting out in the middle of the river on an island. Initially rescuers did not spot him on an island so they did a search of the shorelines when rescuers from Nesquehoning got a visual on him.Emergency crews from Lehighton put their rescue boat in the river at the Glen Onoko access point and floated down river for the rescue.One of the local rafting companies, Jim Thorpe River Adventures, had also had one of their kayakers enter the river to assist in the search going down to the county lot in the initial search.The kayaker appeared to be OK on the island and was talking with personnel from Nesquehoning on the other side of the river.Medics were standing by to check him out as soon a the Lehighton rescue unit could retrieve him from the island and get him to shore
