Towamensing Joe's roll past ES

Brian Taschler wouldn't let his players rest on their laurels.

Despite rolling through the Keystone Senior Babe Ruth regular season undefeated, the head coach of the Towamensing Joe's knew the playoffs would present a different challenge. After posting a 14-3 five-inning win over the East Stroudsburg Mustangs Tuesday in Game 1 of the KSBR championship series, it's clear Taschler's players aren't about to take their foot off the gas anytime soon."We had a great season. We went undefeated in the regular season," Taschler said of the Joe's 12-0 mark. "But the playoffs, the championship (series), is always a different story. You can't come in overconfident."And the boys knew that, and they were up for the game today. They brought the gloves, they brought the sticks, and they did what they had to do."Top-seeded Towamensing didn't waste any time setting the tone, jumping on East Stroudsburg with five runs in the bottom of the first inning."It was a tough game. They jumped on us in the first inning with five runs, and that pretty much set the tempo a little bit," said Mustangs' head coach Tony Croce. "Hats off to them. Lots of respect to them. That's a very, very good team over there."Cody Wallace delivered the dagger in the bottom of the fourth inning, launching a grand slam over the left field fence to give Towamensing a 14-3 lead."All my teammates got on base for me, with a couple of hits and a walk," said Wallace. "Then on a 2-1 pitch, I got the ball right down the middle and just did what I could do."Wallace drove in Austin Kuehner and Brody Boehler with a single to make it 4-0 in the first before Devyn Rehrig brought in the fifth run of the inning with a hard-liner back to the pitcher that scored Wallace."We played a great game tonight and we started off early," said Wallace. "Usually, we wait until about the third or fourth inning to hit the ball. But tonight, we scored five in the first, and jumped on them early, just kept hitting the ball, and Zach (Silfies) pitched a great game."Silfies tossed four innings of one-hit ball for the Joe's.East Stroudsburg had just one base runner through the first three innings before getting to Silfies in the fourth. The Mustangs pushed across three runs in the frame. Stefan Romaniuk scored on a Jerrel Laureano ground out, and East Stroudsburg got its first hit of the contest when Frank Vasquez lined a single to right field that scored Josh Baboolal and Izzy Johnson to cut Towamensing's lead to 8-3.But that was all the Mustangs would get.Silfies struck out Jeremy Laureano for his fifth punch out of the game to end the inning before the Joe's answered with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. Wade Haydt retired the side in order in the top of the fifth inning for the Joe's to end it."It definitely helps me. I know if they score some runs, we're going to score them right back," said Silfies.Jake Taschler delivered an RBI double that scored Boehler, and Sal Melo brought in Taschler and Wallace with a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to give Towamensing an 8-0 lead. After opening the bottom of the fourth with a single, leadoff hitter Ben Serfass scored when Boehler drew a bases-loaded walk. Taschler reached on a grounder with the bases still loaded, and Ian Silfies beat the throw home to put Towamensing in front 10-3 before Wallace delivered the grand slam.SWEEP? … Towamensing will try to finish the series tonight with a win in Game 2 at East Stroudsburg South High School. "I feel like, if we play the way we did today, there's no way we're going to walk home from that field without taking the trophy home. We played great defense, hit the ball great, and I know we have another ace in the hole with our pitcher Brody Boehler, who can come out and throw a gem, too," said Zach Silfies.E.
