Schuylkill County President Judge William E. Baldwin has sentenced Joshua M. DeWire, 28, to three to six months in state prison, and to pay $1,150 restitution to Wells Fargo Bank.
The time is to be served concurrently with a one-to-six month sentence for defiant trespass on Sept. 21, 2016.Tamaqua police on Nov. 15, 2016 charged DeWire with six felony counts of forgery, six counts of theft by deception, and 12 counts of receiving stolen property.They said he committed the crimes on Sept. 8, 2016.According to police, DeWire and another person tried to cash a stolen check on Sept. 22, 2016.Officers were called to the Wells Fargo Bank on West Broad Street at 11 a.m. that day after an employee became suspicious of a woman trying to cash a check. As officers arrived, they saw DeWire, who had no permanent address, yelling and causing a disturbance.Once inside the bank they were met by the bank manager, who had already called the customer whose name was on the check and confirmed it had been stolen.The woman attempting to cash the check, Megan L. Matousek, 23, of East Broad Street, Tamaqua, had left the bank but was found minutes later walking on the road leading to the transfer station. She said she was cashing the check for DeWire.Her case continues to wend its way through the court.
