Coaldale man jailed for theft, warrant

A Coaldale man, William Lynch, is in the Schuylkill County prison waiting to be extradited to New Mexico after he was caught stealing at the Turkey Hill Minit Mart in Tamaqua.

A convenience store employee contacted borough police after a bank bag containing more that $700 went missing from a counter shortly after 11 p.m. on May 3.A clerk had placed the bag on the counter in preparation for a bank deposit then turned aside to wait on a male customer. After finishing with the customer the clerk noticed the bank bag was gone.Security camera video shows the male customer, a black man wearing a gray hoodie, picking up the bag from the counter then walking to the back of the store while stuffing the bag in his pants. He then selected a soft drink and paid for it before leaving. His exit was caught on other cameras showing him getting into a dark SUV and driving away, headed east on Broad Street.Coaldale police later found the SUV, a Nissan Murano, parked on Second Street. The Murrano is registered to a woman who lives on Second Street. Officers attempted to contact her at 2 a.m. but no one answered the door. They learned of a man also living in the home, identifying him as Lynch. A records check discovered an outstanding, full extradition warrant issued by authorities in New Mexico for Lynch.Officers went back to the home and this time someone answered the door. Lynch was asked about the Turkey Hill incident. He admitted being in the store and buying a soda but denied the theft, even after being shown a copy of the video surveillance of him placing the bank bag in his pants. He was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, on charges of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and driving with a suspended license. The judge set bail at $10,000.Lynch was transported to the county prison in Pottsville.
