2017 Primary election - Jim Thorpe region

Voters in the Jim Thorpe region of Carbon County will see contested primary election races in two of the three municipalities in the district on Tuesday. Likewise, they will see competition for positions on the Jim Thorpe Area School District Board of Education.

There is a Democratic race for four four-year terms on the Jim Thorpe Borough Council, while a Republican challenge for the nomination for a six-year term on the Penn Forest Township Board of Supervisors also exists.Voters in those two municipalities, as well as those in Kidder Township's South District, will participate in the school district balloting, where six seats are to be filled this year.Jim Thorpe BoroughThe Democratic race for council seats is between three incumbents and two challengers. The incumbents are Gregory Strubinger, Joanne Klitsch and Thomas Highland while the challengers are Edith Lukasevich and Dennis J. McGinley III.Mayor Michael J. Sofranko, a Republican, is running for re-election to another four-year term and is unopposed both within his party and on the Democratic side.That is also the case for the tax collector's race, where incumbent Terry M. McElmoyle, a Democrat, has no opposition on either ticket.Penn Forest TownshipThe race for the GOP nomination for the six-year term on the township's board of supervisors is between Tom Cross and William L. Miller Jr. the winner of that race will face Democrat Roger L. Meckes, who is unopposed on that ballot.Incumbent tax collector Josiah Behrens III, a Democrat, is running for re-election to another four-year term and is unopposed on both tickets.The township voters are also expected to fill a six-year term on the board of auditors. There are no candidates on either ballot for the post.Kidder TownshipThere are no municipal races in Kidder Township this time around. In fact, there are only two candidates on the ballots.Incumbent Supervisor Larry Polansky, a Republican, is running for re-election to a six-year term on the board. He has no opposition on either side.That is the case with tax collector Kim M. Ginopolas, a Democrat running for another four-year term. No one is challenging her on either ballot.The township voters are also slated to elect an auditor for a six-year term, however, there are no candidates on either side for the position.Jim Thorpe School BoardThere are Democratic nomination challenges for both the four-year and two-year terms that are open on the Jim Thorpe Area School Board.Four people are expected to be elected in November, and there are five Democrats aspiring to win four nominations in the primary. Four of them are also on the GOP ballot, where they are unopposed.Running on the Democratic side are John P. Ciavarella Jr., Gerald Strubinger, Glenn F. Confer Sr., Dennis J. McGinley Jr. and Ron Marciante. One will be left out on that ticket.All but Ciavarella are also running on the Republican ballot and are virtually assured to win those four nominations.Meanwhile, there are two two-year terms on the board to be decided. Running for nominations on the Democratic side are Ciavarella, Marciante and Matthew C. Schutter. The latter two are cross-filed on the Republican ballot and are likely to advance to November in that balloting.Schutter has moved out of the district. His name appears on the ballot because he relocated after the deadline to remove names from the ballot had passed.
