Tamaqua students reminded of dangers of drinking, driving

Be smart.

Don't drink and drive. That message was ingrained into the minds of Tamaqua Area High School students as the Tamaqua Area Student Government Association sponsored Prom Promise activities all week long.Steve Ulicny, group adviser, said the activities were held to remind students of the dangers of drinking and driving during Prom Season.Friday was "Grim Reaper Day," as students represented students killed by drunken drivers, and pledged not to talk for the remainder of the day.Senior Daylon Barron said he believes the program is important for many reasons."The activities made my class realize this is a real epidemic that we have to take seriously," Daylon said. "Doing the activities makes us think 'that could be us,' to be careful, and take this seriously."Fellow senior Nicole Wasserleben echoed her classmate's sentiments."Today symbolizes how many people die from drinking and driving," Nicole said. "I think it's very important that we do this, and it definitely helps a lot."Thursday was "Awareness Day," while Wednesday was "Key Day," as students attending the prom were urged to sign a "key" in the lobby pledging not to drink and drive. Their names were entered into a drawing for a gas card.Tuesday was "Simulation Day," as seniors simulated drunken driving in their physical education classes by attempting to operate golf carts with special goggles, while Monday was "Red Ribbon Day," as members of the group distributed red ribbons to the vehicles in the senior and faculty parking lots.
