Walker Twp. agrees to reimburse fire company

Walker Township officials have agreed to reimburse funds to the New England Fire Co. No. 1 for equipment and building expenses.

On a 2-0 vote, the township's board of supervisors on Thursday approved the payments of $5,212 for radios and $1,574 for building expenses. Supervisor Christine Troxell was absent. Before the board took that action, fire company member Charles Felty again told supervisors he previously asked them to raise the fire tax, but they chose not to.Board Chairman Bill McMullen said he called two neighboring fire companies to see how much money they set aside in their budgets for their respective fire companies.McMullen reminded Felty that the township designated over $27,000 in this year's budget for the fire company.Felty said the issue is that the fire company isn't receiving the support from the residents of the township."They don't come and support it," Felty said. "It I was spending money frivolously, I would side with you."McMullen said he heard from the fire company that there are disagreements as to how they should be spending the money."I think you should get the three trustees here to meet with us," McMullen said. "That's who should be calling the shots; not you."The dispute over finances between the township and the fire company has waged on for some time.Supervisors agreed in March to reimburse the fire company $2,376 for expenses. In November, the board agreed to pay the fire company for the prior year expenses, as well as up through this past September. That came after the board at a special meeting in October tabled the approval of the payment of the bills to the fire company. In a related matter Thursday, the board granted the fire company permission to hold a boot drive to help solicit funds for the fire company.
