The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. announced Saturday it will close its Bon-Ton store at the Schuylkill Mall in Frackville.
The company has entered into an agreement to sell the store property as of May 1, when the store will close. The closing will impact approximately 35 workers at thislocation.“Closing a store is never an easy decision,” commented Kathryn Bufano, president and chief executive officer for The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. “We would like to thank the loyal customers who have shopped with Bon-Ton over the years as well as our devoted store associates for their dedication and friendly customer service to this community.”The affected associates at Bon-Ton’s Schuylkill Mall location will be offered the opportunity to interviewfor available positions at stores in the area or receive career transition benefits, including severance,according to established practices and state employment service support.Bon-Ton follows the Shoe Department and Totally Twisted Pretzels in closing. Chick-fil-A, Arby’s, Hallmark, Schuylkill Valley Sports, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Auntie Anne’s, Littman Jewelers, Kay Jewelers, Liberty Travel, have also closed.Another anchor store, Sears, closed in 2015. Kmart, Weis and Hess’s have also closed,The Schuylkill Mall was sold out of bankruptcy to a large real estate firm from Missouri earlier this year.An auction to sell the property took place on Tuesday, with NorthPoint Development LLC placing the winning bid of $2.1 million.
