A Lehighton man was given a time-served sentence on Monday in Carbon County court on a robbery charge.

Todd Michael Messinger, 29, was sentenced to serve time served (72 days) to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of robbery, to which he previously pleaded guilty.Judge Joseph J. Matika agreed to the time-served sentence after learning of Messinger’s efforts to address a drug addiction problem in which he admitted using about two bricks of heroin a day.Messinger, formerly of Lansford, was charged by Lansford police for an incident on Feb. 28, 2016, in the 200 block of West Bertsch Street, where he attempted to steal the purse. The victim refused to give up the purse and fought off Messinger, who ran away but was later apprehended.Messinger entered the inpatient Salvation Army program and completed five months but was unsuccessfully discharged. He then entered another inpatient program for 28 days, which he successfully completed.Messinger told Matika he has been drug-free for a year and is currently enrolled in a suboxone program.Messinger also said he planned to move out of the area to get away from the people who he associated with during his drug addiction problems.Matika warned him however, no matter where he goes, the drug influences will still be there, but added, “You now have the tools you need” to address these influences. In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Messinger to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, render 75 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
