Nesquehoning residents reminded to clean up after dogs

Nesquehoning is again reminding residents to clean up after their dogs.

Mayor Sam Kitchko said he recently fielded complaints about pet owners not cleaning up after their pets after they defecate within the borough."I want to remind residents that it is courtesy to their neighbors to pick it up and if we catch you, you will get a fine," he said.According to the borough's animal ordinance, it is "unlawful for any person to allow excrement from the person's dog to remain on any public sidewalks, streets, alleys or thoroughfares of the borough of Nesquehoning and it shall be unlawful for any person to fail to remove excrement from the person's dog from any public sidewalks, streets, alleys or thoroughfares of the borough of Nesquehoning."A dog owner who is caught not cleaning up after their dog can be cited and fined.Kitchko also reminds residents that dogs need to be leashed when not on their properties.Other businessBorough council discussed or acted on the following items:• Approved the list of streetlights in Lake Hauto and the Hauto Valley Estates that will either be removed, added or converted. A total of nine lights will be removed and four will be added to other areas in those two parts of the borough that have been identified as needing a streetlight. The list will be sent to PPL. Council will continue to look at the lights within the borough to see what changes could be made to help cut down on lighting costs.• Nesquehoning Hose Company Fire Chief John McArdle commended the fire departments for their actions during the two-alarm fire in the borough during the snowstorm. Four homes were damaged during the fire. He said it was challenging due to some issues that arose regarding the water supply, but everything has been resolved and worked out well.• Council is looking into quality of life and open container ordinances to help code enforcement in the borough. There were drafts of an ordinance on open containers in the past but it was never adopted.• Councilman George Sabol announced that Columbus Cleaning Company in the borough donated an American flag and a solar light for a flagpole. Council thanked them for the donation.• Kitchko reported for the months of January and February, the police collected $3,887.17; issued 70 citations, had 769 incidents reported and drove 6,297 miles while on patrol.• The next Nesquehoning Neighborhood Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 4 in the borough hall.
