A Lehighton man was sentenced to a year in jail on Thursday on a drunken driving charge.

He was one of four sentenced on driving under the influence charges by Judge Joseph J. Matika. All previously pleaded to the charges.In crashWalter Frank Kunsman Jr.,32, was sentenced to serve one to two years on the DUI count. He was arrested on Nov. 4, 2015, along Catawissa Street by Nesquehoning police after his vehicle struck parked vehicles. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Since his arrest, Kunsman has addressed a substance abuse problem. He spent six months in an inpatient rehabilitation program run by the Salvation Army, successfully completing it. He also spent another 26 days inpatient in another program and 35 days in jail on the charge.Matika also ordered Kunsman to pay a fine of $2,500, license suspended for 18 months, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render 100 hours of community service after he completes his prison term.Matika gave him total credit for 233 days, which included the jail time and inpatient stays. He will begin the remainder of his prison term at 9 a.m. Feb. 23.Other casesSamantha Lynn Wagenhurst,33, of Tamaqua, was sentenced to serve a total of three to 60 months in prison on charges of DUI, driving under suspension-DUI related and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspension charge was her ninth conviction.Wagenhurst was arrested on March 2, 2016, along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton by state police at Lehighton. At the time of the stop, she was driving with a suspended license.Troopers also said she was driving under the influence of a controlled substance. A records check showed that she had eight prior convictions for driving while under suspension.Wagenhurst is currently an inmate in the Northampton County prison serving a sentence for a probation/parole violation.Wagenhurst said she has been in prison for nine and a half months on charges in Northampton and Carbon counties.She told Matika, "I just want to see my kids." She has three children.Matika said, "It seems you have a long history of drug abuse." He told her if she didn't get her drug addiction under control, her kids will lose her forever.In addition to the prison term, Matika ordered her to pay total fines of $2,500, her license suspended for 18 months, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and she must render 100 hours of community service when released on parole. Matika ruled his sentence would run concurrent with the one she is now serving in Northampton County.Therese A. O'Donnell, 45, of Lehighton, was placed on probation for six months as a first-time offender. She was arrested on Oct. 4, 2016, in East Penn Township by state police at Lehighton. No BAC was available.She was also ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Amy E. Kichline, 31, of Albrightsville, was placed on probation for six months as a first-time offender. She was arrested by Kidder Township police on Sept. 2, 2016. No BAC was available.She was also ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation and follow all recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
