Slatington swears in fire chief

Jason Nicholas was officially sworn in Monday as Slatington Borough's Fire Chief by Mayor Walter Niedermeyer.

"He's done a good job for us," said Councilman Jon Rinker.Nicholas has more than 31 years of firefighting experience. He started his career at the age of 14 when he was a junior firefighter for Palmerton/West End department. He had served as a chief officer in Slatington for the past six years before being promoted to chief in 2016."Jason, along with the other firefighters up there, have brought our fire company back to be something we can be proud of," he said.Nicholas was appointed to the position of fire chief in October after the board voted to remove Keith Weaver from the role for insubordination.The official chief said the company will continue working on protecting the residents of the borough and "growing our mutual aid relationships. I have a great group of men and women and I appreciate the crew helping to work together to move forward," he said.The board voted to pass an ordinance removing the borough residence restriction for the position of fire chief.The new rule states the chief and crew must live within the Northern Lehigh School District to be eligible to hold the position and serve the borough.
