Slatington police chief submits equipment requests to council
Police Chief David Rachman submitted a list of equipment requests to borough council Monday night. The items include an outfitted cruiser from Kovatch for $33,353. Three of the police cruisers will be updated with a new TRACS system for $2,000 from Baycom, two Tasers with holsters for $2,141 and six new bullet-resistant vests from MP Outfitters at a price of $2,790, which will be paid for with a $2,790 grant from the Department of Justice.
The items had been budgeted into the 2017 borough finances after being requested in 2016.Rachman assured borough resident Rhonda Russell that he would speak with Fred Rentschler, owner of Rentschler Chevrolet, Jeep, Dodge and Ram, regarding car trailer unloading on Route 873.Russell spoke to the borough council during its monthly meeting about the hazardous conditions the trailer causes for traffic."Can we have a no parking sign next to Rentschler's dealership? My son and I were in a car accident in November because we couldn't see around the car carrier," she said.Russell said she was pulling out of Williams Street when the carrier was parked on the Route 873 side of the dealership, blocking visibility of oncoming traffic. No one was injured, but Russell said her car sustained $4,000 in damage.Rachman said he would call Rentschler about unloading vehicles on a different side of the property.Jason Ruff of the Main Street Merchants Group updated the board on the success of the second First Friday event hosted Feb. 3, in the borough."It was larger than the first one. We want to thank the police foot patrol for their help," he said. The third First Friday is scheduled for April 7, where businesses will offer specials and stay open later into the evening. The group meets the first Tuesday of every month at Ruff's Charlotte Fay's Main Street Diner and encourages residents and business owners alike to join the meeting with ideas and suggestions to continue the growth of the historic district."They are planning to revitalize the downtown, clearing it up and getting residents to come down and be a part of it. It's a wonderful committee," said Borough Manager Judith Danko."One item they are working on is to get solar-powered lights for the trees downtown," she said."The chamber wants to work with me to get a grant for the lights. If we are able to get the grant, there would be no cost to the borough. I would like the board's blessing to move forward," she said. The board agreed, with the manager applying for the grant."I think it's a great idea," Rinker said."And it won't cost us anything," Councilman David Schnaars said.
