Palmerton edges No. Lehigh

Jared Mooney could have talked about himself.

Instead, the talented Palmerton senior turned the attention to his team.Moments after earning his 100th career victory, Mooney was more eager to chat about the Blue Bombers' 42-36 win over rival Northern Lehigh than any individual accomplishment."It's huge to get a win like this," said Mooney. "We haven't beat them in a while … so it's awesome for us. It's just awesome to get a win like that."Tuesday marked Palmerton's first Colonial League win over the Bulldogs since Jan. 26, 2013.The moment was not lost on Blue Bombers' head coach Justin Petersen, either."Going into it, we knew it was going to be close. It's a rivalry match," said Petersen. "It's nice to have good matches with these guys. You could see the energy in here - it was awesome. It was a good thing for our kids."While Mooney's pin at 220 pounds was a milestone, Shawn Gardner's fall at 113 was no less significant for Palmerton (10-13, 4-4).A Jason Schaffer pin at 285 pounds cut Northern Lehigh's deficit to 36-30 with just two bouts remaining following a double forfeit at 106, putting the spotlight squarely on the match at 113.But Gardner stepped up and delivered a critical blow. The freshman secured a fall in 5:28 for six crucial points that pushed the Blue Bombers' advantage to 42-30 and sealed the win."That whole match, it looked like he was running out of gas the whole time, then all of a sudden, he pulls it out," Petersen said of Gardner. "I'm glad. He had a gutsy effort, and got it done."The frenetic finish typified a back-and-forth affair, one the Bulldogs were in control of early.Back-to-back pins by Seth Fronheiser (126) and Ezra Neff (132) gave Northern Lehigh a 12-0 lead after the first two matches."We came out of the gates pretty strong," said Bulldogs' head coach Scott Snyder. "We got two falls right off the start. And then we gave up a forfeit, and we trade another fall."Then we came back to (Brandon) Belfonti, and he comes away with a fall that was a match where we weren't sure if he was going to get a decision. We didn't know, so that was big for us."Belfonti's pin at 152 pounds made it 18-12 Northern Lehigh following a forfeit by the Bulldogs at 138 and a pin by the Blue Bombers' Lucas Christman at 145.The teams traded forfeits over the next three matches until Kyle Kralik put Palmerton ahead 30-24 with a pin at 195. Kralik's fall was followed by Mooney's triumph at 220, which made it 36-24."I think, overall, we wrestled as a team," said Petersen. "We got some big match-ups where we had guys bumping up and bumping around. We had all kinds of movement in our lineup, and never once did they question it. They all did what they were asked, and what I asked of them, and they're just really good kids. I'm glad they got it."HONORED … Tuesday was Senior Night for Northern Lehigh wrestlers.
