Vehicle stop leads to prison term for New York state man

A vehicle stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township last year led to a prison term for a passenger.

Jason Arocho, 24, of Bronx, was sentenced Thursday to serve six to 12 months in the Carbon County prison by Judge Joseph J. Matika. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession of an instrument of crime.Arocho was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on Sept. 19 by state police at Fern Ridge in which marijuana and about 46 counterfeit $100 bills were found.Matika told Arocho his prior record score put him in a minimum sentencing range of anywhere between six and 18 months. He told him any time he gets arrested, because of his prior record score, no matter what the charge, he could face jail time.Arocho was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, render 25 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee when paroled. He was given credit for 17 days already spent in jail on the charge. He began the jail term immediately. The driver of the vehicle was also charged.
