Lansford discusses ordinances, trash collection

Lansford councilman Joseph Butrie suggested last week that if the borough wasn't going to enforce some ordinances, it should do away with them.

He cited the sidewalk cleaning ordinance requires sidewalks to be clear from snow at least 36 inches or with a path of about the width of a shovel.Residents also complained about Tamaqua Transfer employees.Concerns include items being broken and garbage spread out on the street. It was suggested to invite the owner of the company to come to the next meeting.PoliceCouncilwoman Rose Mary Cannon said she believes the police department in Lansford is doing a great job in the midst of so many bad police slayings around the country."It's so easy for people to sit in this office and even in here in this building and contradict, and criticize the police, but they don't know on a daily basis what they face when they go out on the streets," she said."They are doing an excellent job in a very difficult situation."StreetlightsCannon expressed disgust regarding the scamming contractors from Municipal Energy Management who only got house arrest and probation after affecting several towns by not fulfilling their contracted work on the streetlights and robbing them of thousands in taxpayer money.In 2008, representatives from MEM made a presentation to Nesquehoning council about the possibility of the borough buying its streetlights from PPL and hiring MEM to do the maintenance.Lansford, Coaldale, Nesquehoning and Tamaqua hired the company for lighting services.The tax collector report revealed that the total collected for the year 2016 is $904,162.48. $38,445.41 was collected in the month of December.A motion to pay all bills totaling $45,902.46 was passed.AppointmentsJill Seigendall is the delegate for the Carbon County Tax Collection Committee, and Mary Soberick as the alternate.A motion was passed to approve the Carbon County Tax Claim sale of repository properties for 220 W. Patterson St., 218 W. Patterson St., 600 E. Front St. and 21½ Center St.A request for a long-term rental/lease agreement for the 12 Center St./201 W. Bertsch St./Community Garden Lot was denied. The lot will be sold.The appointment for a UCC Code Official and zoning officer was tabled for next month to allow having a contract executed and signed.Seigendall was appointed the Right To Know officer.The borough will advertise for the police pension board vacancy.The meeting dates for the borough are set for 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the borough hall.Councilmen Colin Jones, John Turcmanovich and Matthew Walsh were absent.
