Weissport is seeking new solicitor, tax collector
Weissport Borough Council likely will go through the first month of 2017 without a solicitor.
On Monday night, it also learned that its appointed tax collector no longer wants the position.Regarding the solicitor, the council said it thought its previous solicitor would submit some names for a replacement but it hasn't happened.The prior solicitor quit effective Dec. 31.Council members said they feel there might be two lawyers interested in the position and will check with them to see if either is interested. The council is hoping to appoint a new solicitor at its Feb. 6 meeting.Regarding its tax collector, that position is presently held by Lynette Moyer, who was appointed to the post a year ago.Council member Arland Moyer, who is Lynette's husband, told the council his wife intends to give up that position as soon as a replacement can be found.The tax collector position will be on the municipal election ballots this year and Arland said Lynette will not be a candidate.The tax collector is also in charge of billing residents for municipal trash collection.In other business• Moyer said garbage collection in the borough is now occurring on Thursdays. The previous pickup date was Tuesday.Also, recycling bins have been placed at the south end of White Street.Council President Gene Kershner said the recycling is not mandatory.Residents who wish to recycle can place glass containers, paper (including newspapers, brown grocery bags, copy paper, ledger paper, cardboard, milk cartons and soft covered workbooks), aluminum cans, frozen food cartons and plastic containers bearing recycling numbers 1-7.• An informal town meeting will be held at 1
p.m.Feb. 5 for anyone interested in helping to plan Weissport's 150th anniversary celebration. The celebration will occur on June 3 with the rain date on June 4.Council member Brenda Leiby said, "We just want to throw some ideas around."She said the borough has no money allocated for the celebration so any event held will depend on volunteers.• Councilman Moyer said all property owners will receive a letter outlining various borough regulations that pertain to them, including informing tenants that moving permits are required. Violation the various regulations can result in fines or prison time.• Some renovations are occurring at the borough garage. The council agreed to purchase a new heater for the restroom in the building as long as the heater doesn't cost more than $300.
