Lehighton power outage planned for fire cleanup

The Lehighton Borough Light & Power Department has scheduled an electric outage from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday for the cleanup at the site of the fire at 256 N. Second St.

Residents on Coal Street, from Second to Third streets, and Center Alley, from Coal to Ochre, will be affected by the outage, according to borough Manager Nicole Beckett.Beckett said the cleanup of the site was set to commence today, and that the contractor would be using heavy equipment, which will be close to the power lines."In order to assure the safety of the project, the Light & Power Department will turn off the power in that area," Beckett said. "The property owner's contractor had notified the borough of the projected timeline of the site cleanup."Beckett said the borough has asked those residents to plan accordingly for the power outage, and apologizes for any inconvenience.An intense fire gutted an apartment complex at the corner of Second and Coal streets last week.The structure was then knocked down by a local contractor.The blaze initially broke out around 11 p.m. Jan. 8 at 256 N. Second St.Firefighters were then called back for a rekindle the morning of Jan. 9, as a sea of firefighters from various counties remained on scene most of the day.Nine people were displaced from the apartment complex that was ravaged by the fire.Borough Fire Chief Patrick Mriss said two firefighters sustained weather-related injuries.The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is being looked into by a state fire marshal.
