Water extraction protest planned tonight in West Penn Township

A "peaceful protest" to stop water extraction will be held before this evening's West Penn Township board of supervisors meeting.

The protest will be staged at 6:30 p.m. before the board's regularly scheduled monthly meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m.Donna Montagner, of Berks County, said she "has a good friend who resides on Blue Mountain Road.""The protest will be due to the illegal water extraction that continues in the township, causing residents to have water issues, such as muddy water," Montagner said. "We hope to stop the extraction and be able to use our water in our homes."The protest comes one month after a debate over whether a land development plan should be submitted for water extraction operations. On Jan. 13, 2016, a group of residents filed a lawsuit in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia County against businesses and people associated with water extraction operations in the township. At the center of the lawsuit is the water extraction site at the intersection of Kepners Road and Blue Mountain Drive, and a newer water extraction site being erected at 1 Fort Franklin Road.
