(AP) Schuylkill County's unemployment rate fell one-half of a percentage point in November.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.2 percent, according to the latest figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Labor & Industry. Over the year, the rate is up four-tenths of a point from 5.8 percent.November's seasonally adjusted rate is the lowest it has been since 6.1 percent in June. The state rate was 5.7 percent in November while the national rate was 4.6 percent. The county had 51,400 total nonfarm jobs in November, an increase of 200 since October."The county has added 500 jobs over the year, or 1 percent, while the state job count has grown by 0.7 percent over the same period," Jeff Newman, industry and business analyst for the department, said Thursday. "So, both the unemployment rate and jobs are encouraging numbers. We are now in our benchmarking period and the numbers for 2016 will be subject to revision in March."I suspect some of the highs and lows over the year may smooth out somewhat as individual months can be disproportionately influenced and cause one month peaks and valleys. It's also why we say one month does not make a trend."The seasonally adjusted labor force in the county dropped 200 to 68,500 for November. The number of employed increased 100 to 64,200 over the month, while the number of unemployed dropped 300 to 4,300, according to the seasonally adjusted figures.
