Ringing in the new year at home

Don’t feel like putting up with the crowds at your favorite club or restaurant for New Year’s Eve, opting to stay home instead?

Well, you’re not alone — about 48 percent of Americans are choosing to celebrate the holiday in the comfort of their own abode. Plus, you can end up saving plenty of money and personalize your own little party to your own liking.New Year’s Eve is often viewed as a time to go all-out in your celebrations, and that can amount to a huge expenditure. However, a study by WalletHub found that 83 percent of Americans spend less than $200 on their own New Year’s festivities. At home, you can build your own budget-conscious menu for far less than what you would spend at the bar or restaurant.A variety of small appetizers — cheese and crackers, wings, pigs in a blanket, or perhaps some stuffed mushrooms or pate, if you feel fancy — can make up for a meal.More than 360 million glasses of sparkling wine are consumed on New Year’s Eve, making it the quintessential holiday beverage. If your celebration is taking place in your living room in lieu of the ballroom, that certainly cuts down on the cost of bubbly. In fact, you could just get a nice bottle of sparkling wine — like Bartenura Sparkling Muscato Rose — for about $10 to start. If you want to spring for a true Champagne — produced with grapes from Champagne, France — know that the better varieties come at a price. For a full bottle, expect to shell out about $25 or more to start at the low end, with options like Champagne Delamotte Brut.Fine Wine and Good Spirits does carry Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal Rose Brut 2007 for $469.99, if you feel like popping the cork in a tux and monocle. If you have kids to accommodate, consider some sparkling cider — there are plenty of varieties beyond the old-fashioned apple, too.Keep in mind, though, that if you indulge, stay off the road — New Year’s Eve is considered the drunkest night of the year, with an average BAC of 0.094 percent. Consider it another great reason to ring in the year at your own place. For entertainment, the first thing that comes to mind is watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.A hallmark of the holiday since 1972, the tradition goes on even with the passing of Clark in 2012, with Ryan Seacrest hosting this year’s event.DNCE, Gloria Estefan, and Thomas Rhett kick off the performances starting at 8 p.m., with Mariah Carey rounding out the show before the ball drops.More than 175 million people will have their eyes glued to the screen to see the Times Square Ball ring in the New Year.Of course, you could try something original or offbeat as well — watch a movie with a loved one or friends, play some Cards Against Humanity or the Pie Face Game, or have an in-house dance party, for example. So, if you just don’t feel like making the trek to Times Square — or the local bar, for that matter — on New Year’s Eve, remember that you can have just as much, or even more fun at your own home.Plus, you won’t have to pay a cover charge.
