Panther Vy. spurt helps down Weatherly

Perhaps Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers said it best.

"R-E-L-A-X."Well, Panther Valley's interim head coach Keith Gogal had the same message to his team during the first quarter of a Schuylkill League Division 3 contest with Weatherly. After trailing by a 12-6 margin halfway through the initial period, Gogal burned a timeout to rally the troops."Come out and relax," said the Panther Valley coach. "When you get down like that, you tend to panic. Just go out there and play the game that you know how to play and just roll with it. You come out and try and get a fresh start and try not to worry about the score."The Panthers immediately responded by ripping off a massive 17-0 run, which trickled into the second quarter. Panther Valley never trailed again after regaining the lead in the latter moments of the first period, en route to a 67-50 league victory over the Wreckers."He just said push the ball and try to get some buckets," explained PV point guard Rene Figueroa, of what was said in the first quarter huddle. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, I knew it would be a tough game."Figueroa stuffed the stat sheet and was the foundation of the Panthers' explosion in the first half.He scored 12 of his game-high 21 points during the 17-0 spurt, which included a handful of steals and impressive coast-to-coast sequences for buckets. Figueroa finished with six rebounds, four assists, and four steals."He's a solid player," Gogal said. "He brings a different energy and dimension to the team."Weatherly started off hot and finished strong. The Wreckers put on their full-court defense later in the game, and finally appeared to dictate the pace of the game in the closing minutes. Jeremy Moser led Weatherly with 15 points, while Zach Moon chipped in a dozen. But the Panthers huge run in the first half was too much to come back from, as PV's lead was never in jeopardy in the second half."I liked the energy that we brought and the way that we played together," Vogal said. "When they (Weatherly) went on a little spurt, we didn't get down on each other. We had great energy the way we played out there. We played well today. It's nice to get a league win."GETTING THERE ... Vogal mentioned before the season that Brendan Morgans, Alex Mehmeti, and Allen Perez would have to play big roles this season for the team to be successful. The trio combined for a dozen points. "They're starting to mesh," the PV coach said. "We have guys that probably played more in the first five games of the season than they have in the last season-and-a-half. We're throwing them in positions that they have to gel and they're not accustomed to being in. Things are starting together, slowly but surely."ANOTHER PANTHER ... PV's Tristan Blasko, who had 16 points and 10 boards, earned praise from his coach. "He's a hard worker," Gogal said. "He works on his game and his jumper at practice. We work on the pick-and-roll. For a big guy, he shoots well from 15 or 18 feet."WEATHERLYMoon 4-2-5-12, Buck 3-2-2-10, Yurchack 2-0-1-4, Moser 5-5-7-15, Zaremba 1-0-1-3, Koslop 0-0-2-0, Knepper 1-0-4-2, Hinkle 0-0-0-0, Blieler 0-0-0-0, Arthur 0-0-0-0.
